Trainee Mobile Crane Operator

Location – Camberley and Reading

We are looking to recruit people in the Camberley and Reading area to train as Mobile Crane Operators.

The role offered is full-time 40hrs Monday-Friday although we expect the applicant to be flexible and be able to work overtime, including weekend working where required.

Role Requirements:

  • The minimum requirement is an HGV Cat C (Class 2) Driving Licence.
  • Able to work well as part of a team and individually.
  • Enthusiastic and punctual.

Over the course of the 2-year programme, you will gain the following qualifications:

  • CPCS Mobile Crane Operator Red card (converted to Blue card once 300 hours have been completed),
  • CPCS Slinger Signaller Red card (converted to Blue card once 300 hours have been completed),
  • Level 2 NVQ in Cranes and Specialist Lifting and Slinger/Signaller.

Main Job Roles include:

  • Operate a Mobile Crane allocated to you by the company following an assessment from a manufacturer induction or competent operator of the allocated machine.
  • Drive the crane from the depot of origin, to the requested site, at the time of request. On arrival on-site set up the crane as per the relevant machine manufacturers’ operating manual in the position identified in the method statement compiled by the customer or the company.
  • Operate the crane via communications from onsite slinger/signallers’ utilising 2-way radios or hand signals as required by the requirements of the on-site method statement.
  • Carry out pre-operational checks on machine as required via company policy and complete company documentation identifying any issues arising from those checks.
  • Complete routine maintenance as required, the frequency of which is as per company policy with the assistance of the depot crane engineer as required.

HGV Mechanic . Location: Southwater Depot

Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: From £37,500.00 per year (potential earnings +50k with overtime)

Southern Cranes & Access Ltd are a leading provider of mobile crane hire, contract lifting services and powered access solutions operating in and around London and South East England. We are actively seeking to add a fully-skilled, experienced and qualified heavy plant/HGV Mechanic to join our team from our Southwater depot.

General Duties to include but not exhaustive to:

  • Reviewing and repairing defined defects
  • Vehicle safety inspections
  • Carry out routine servicing and maintenance
  • General repairs
  • MOT preparation/presentation
  • Brake relines
  • On call ROTA currently 1 in 4 weeks (counted as overtime).

HGV Mechanic key attributes:

  • Have at least four years' experience working on heavy plant/HGV/cranes/lorry loaders in the construction industry although we will still consider someone with less experience if we consider them right for the role
  • Recognised qualifications (City & Guilds/NVQ Level 2/3) for HGV vehicles
  • Able to think for themselves and have a can-do attitude
  • Be punctual, reliable and flexible
  • Be able to think outside the box and work things out
  • Be able to use diagnostic equipment to fault find and diagnose electrical faults
  • Have a good understanding of automotive electrical systems including CAN bus and have a basic understanding of hydraulic systems
  • Have a willingness to learn new systems and, in due course, assist with the maintenance and repair of mobile cranes
  • Have good communication skills and basic computer skills to fill out job sheets on time
  • Have a comprehensive toolkit although special tools are provided by the company

HGV Ballast Driver/HGV Class C+E (Class 1) . Location: Southwater depot

We are currently recruiting for HGV Ballast Drivers to support our busy transport division. 


Previous experience is desirable but not essential if you have previous experience with heavy haulage (STGO Cat 2 / Cat 3) on the job training will be provided for the successful candidates. You must hold HGV Class C+E (Class 1) Licence and Driver CPC Card.

Opportunity to further your training to gain new skills; we can offer HIAB training if you show a willingness to further your skills. Applicants must be flexible to travel to various locations in as required and have a positive attitude with the ability to maintain good working relationships with colleagues, clients, and contractors.

Salary is negotiable based on experience.

Main Duties:

  • To undertake the safe, secure and efficient movement of ballast and equipment as required
  • Performing scheduled deliveries and collections to and from customer sites as required
  • Carry out daily vehicle checks
  • Comply with all legal requirements relating to licensing, driver’s hours, rest period, speed limits and the correct use of digital tachograph systems
  • Ensure vehicles / trailers are properly maintained, cleaned, and used in accordance with permitted weight limits
  • Always representing SCA in a professional and courteous manner to colleagues, customers, the general public and other road users
  • Check equipment is loaded/unloaded in a safe manner in accordance with current legislation and SCA SSOW
