Centrepiece lift at Goodwood Festival of Speed
This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed celebrated 70 years of Porsche motor cars. Southern Cranes were hired by Littlehampton Welding to erect this year’s iconic centrepiece sculpture which featured six examples of different Porsche models from different eras and backgrounds.
The sculpture stood 52 metres high and weighed 30 tonnes in total. Southern Cranes used its Liebherr LTM1450 (450 tonne) mobile crane to erect the heaviest central section which weighed 22 tonnes.
The Liebherr LTM1450 has arrived!
Our brand new Liebherr LTM1450 has now arrived and is available to hire. Our operatives have spent the last two weeks completing their induction on this state of the art machine and are now keen to test its full operational potential. For a heavy crane it is highly versatile and far quicker to rig/de-rig than many of its competitors. It boasts an 85-metre main boom and the potential for an 84-metre luffing fly jib. It incorporates Liebherr’s ‘Vario base’ outrigger system and ‘Vario-ballast’ to reduce the tail swing and axle loadings. For further information please call 01403 790874.
Liebherr LTM1450 arriving soon
We are delighted to announce the imminent arrival of our Liebherr LTM1450. This will be one of the largest and most capable mobile cranes in our fleet. The crane boasts an 85m main boom with a 7m swing-round heavy duty fly, an 84m luffing fly, fast rigging, Liebherr's ‘Vario-base’ out-rigger system, ‘Vario-ballast’ to reduce tail swing and low axle loadings. Tandem lift at the Goodwood Festival of Speed
Once again Southern Cranes were given the responsibility for the erection and dismantling of the centre-piece sculpture at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed. Lifting the top half of the main structure required a tandem lift using a Grove MK5250 and a Terex AC120. This year's sculpture celebrated the career of ex-F1 boss, Bernie Ecclestone.

Liebherr LTM1350 on site
Our Liebherr LTM1350 was recently deployed to a site in Battersea to erect a tower crane. It was operating with 70 tonnes of counterweight and a fixed fly jib. It was accompanied by our Mercedes Arocs tractor unit and Nooteboom ballast trailer.
Liebherr MK140 available now
Southern Cranes have recently taken delivery of their new and much anticipated fleet addition. The Liebherr MK140 mobile tower crane is only 16 metres long and runs on a 5-axle chassis which makes it the most compact mobile tower crane in its class.

It boasts a 37-metre vertical telescopic boom onto which a 65-metre luffing lattice jib attaches. This means it can operate to a height of almost 95 metres and a maximum radius of 65 metres.

Crane numbers raised with Liebherr
Southern Cranes has added 2 more LTM1060s to its fleet. We took delivery of our first Liebherr LTM1060 with Liebherr’s unique VarioBase system in October 2015.This crane is proving popular due to its compact 3-axle chassis and a number of other useful features. It has a strong 48-metre main boom and can travel with all 12.8 tonnes of counterweight and a double fly jib.

In addition to the new LTM 1060, we have also recently taken delivery of two Liebherr LTM1040s. On this compact 2-axle crane, both axles are driven and steerable to ensure excellent all-terrain capability and manoeuvrability even on confined building sites. Maximum capacities with full and partial ballast give this crane great operational flexibility and, with a maximum load capacity of 40 tonnes, the LTM 1040-2.1 offers outstanding load carrying performance over the entire operating area. A maximum lifting height of 44 m can be achieved with the 35 m long, continuously variable 4-section telescopic boom, which uses the hydro-mechanical telescoping system to extend to the required length quickly. The telescoping operation can also be performed under load. Other features include sensitive working by electronic crane control and LICCON2 control with mobile display unit BTT plus pneumatic disc brakes now fitted as standard, which means maintenance costs are lower and braking more efficient.

These new machines are available to hire now.
Goodwood Festival of Speed 2016
The Festival of Speed offers enthusiasts an unrivalled opportunity to get close to the action and to meet the great champions who gather at Goodwood each summer. It has been running since 1993 on the same stretch of the March family's driveway. While the location has remained the same and Lord March continues to lead the creative direction, the main aspect that has evolved is the scale. With the enthusiasm and investment of the wider motoring and motorsport community, FOS has become an internationally celebrated, sell-out occasion.
LTM 1060 for Southern Cranes & Access
The Liebherr LTM1060 will work alongside the many Liebherr cranes in its fleet. The crane comes with a 48-metre main boom, good capacities, mobility, comfort and safety systems as key features which makes it ideal for the demands of our customers.

The new crane is equipped with Liebherr's VarioBase system, which allows each outrigger to be extended to any length with the load chart for any configuration automatically calculated within the LICCON control system.

With the 16-metre bi-fold swingaway extension fitted, the crane has 66 metre top height and can lift to a maximum radius of 48 metres. In the UK, the LTM 1060-3.1 can travel with all 12.8 tonnes of counterweight along with the bi-fold extension.

Southern Cranes & Access director Kelvin Prince said: “We are very pleased to add the LTM 1060 to our fleet as its predecessor proved to be a strong and reliable crane. Also, being the first crane hirer in the UK to purchase a Liebherr machine with VarioBase - an LTM 1130 - we know this feature will be appreciated by our customers.”
Getting out of deep water
A massive and very dramatic rescue lasting seven days to recover a lorry after it fell through a bridge in Funtley near Fareham was carried out by the Terex Explorer 5600. During the rescue, 90 homes and businesses had power restricted to their premises for five hours whilst specialists and a new crane worked closely to overhead high voltage power cables.

A total of 50 people worked on safely recovering the lorry despite the rain and wind lashing down from the early hours of the morning.

The Explorer 5600, laden with 40 tonnes of ballast, swung its boom across the River Meon 50 foot in the air with heavy duty strops in an attempt to free the trapped 17-tonne lorry. Later that evening the lorry was driven away on the back of a low loader to be checked for internal damage and repairs.

Watch the video following the delicate operation.

A total length of 14.3 metres and a carrier width of 2.75 metres makes the Explorer 5600 the most compact crane in its capacity class.

This machine utilises a one-engine concept with different performance set-up for operation lower and upper. This ensures an optimal power spectrum and minimised operational and maintenance costs.

The crane is sure to be a valuable addition to the wide range of lifting machinery available from Southern Cranes.
